VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN
AN EXPERIENCE failed
You may already know the classic British horror tale of Mary Shelley, Frankenstein - also known known as The Modern Prometheus. On Thursday (26), director Paul McGuigan and writer Max Landis launch its modern film version of the iconic story, entitled Victor Frankenstein. A messy mix of comedy, horror and action among friends, the film begins with a fun and invigorating scene, but that is connected to a worn story ... like a reanimated corpse that stinks of the feet to the head. The pair of actors James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe interpret the scientist Frankenstein and his loyal assistant Igor, respectively. The film is essentially a prequel narrated by Igor perspective, detailing how Victor is the hunchback unnamed in a circus and rescues the young man from his cruel life. Frankenstein gives a name for the character Radcliffe after his roommate dies. The two did not take time to form a friendship, and this Igor version is almost as bright as the iconic mad scientist. And of course, the pair soon begins to work on creating a monster. But since we're talking about a prequel, the film does not just tell the story we know so well about the creation of Frankenstein's monster. The chemistry between McAvoy and Radcliffe makes the film work halfway, mainly for showing a madman Victor trying to present Igor for high society, science, and especially for independence. It seems that the actors relished the chance to bring a new version for these two character - and that's exactly what they can do. Except for the modern theme, Victor Frankenstein is very much a period piece, with a figure, production design and even excellent special effects. There are also traces the gothic Frankenstein and Igor experiments - something which unfortunately has the consequence of limiting the fime access for younger viewers. The problem of the film is that, sooner or later, the main theme of Frankenstein would have to appear. And what a Frankenstein adaptation without a monster? Not only does this lead to an end the long senseless act, it also means a change of pace for the film that knocks the aspects that so far made Victor Frankenstein a pleasant experience. As a result, the film ends in a shy way, trying too hard to get a connection to the story that follows prequel. Jessica Brown Findlay plays Lorelei, the beautiful circus acrobat who loves Igor. The need to add a female presence in the film makes sense, but the romance between the two characters is nothing convincing. It's unfortunate because you can see that McGuigan and Landis know and love the movie's source material - not only the book of Shelley, but also several other film adaptations. Perhaps, this movie would have worked better if the filmmakers had simply made a Frankenstein, unlike Frankenstein Begins. Victor Frankenstein VERDICT is an almost accident that is as far as the classic book movies can arrive in theaters. Its mix of genres initially brings refreshment for a family history. However, the final act just covering all other scenes, causing the film to the other failed experiment.
